A business development manager does exactly what their title sounds like. These upper-level sales people create new opportunities for their company to grow. In essence, they develop new business, by finding new clients or simply just persuading current clients to sign on for another service a company offers. If you’re a great sales person and love working with people, this may just be the career path you’re looking for.
A business development manager generally works a normal workweek, at around 40 hours, with a starting salary around £25,000. Keep in mind that salary is generally based upon experience, so you could be offered more or less depending on what you bring to the table, including prior experience, training or skills.
Technical skills that are generally needed include a comfort with technology and communication skills. Deadlines are also important, as well as the ability to work under pressure. Knowledge of math, as well as English is helpful. You don’t necessarily need a degree to work as a business development manager, though, as always, a degree can come in handy in any career. However, some knowledge of sales and marketing is vital, though you may be able to start with a little training and go from there.
Duties vary, but generally you’ll be doing a little bit of the following:
On some occasions, you will need to meet a pre-set sales goal. Though hours are generally typical office hours, sometimes you will work later at events and when meeting clients. Sometimes, part-time positions can be arranged. If you’re not quite sure your current skills will benefit you in the position, internships may also be available. An internship in this department can help you to learn, sales, management, marketing and business skills helpful in any career. A driving license is required for the position, and some business development managers receive a company car. A dress code of business attire must be followed at all times.
